Quoting a custom gate takes days and installing one usually takes a day. The fabrication in between is the main block of time, and it depends on the queue when you order, which grows fast from October. The earlier in spring you order, the safer your pre-Christmas install.
Here’s where the time actually goes, what stretches it, and how to keep your job moving.
Where the time goes
Quote: days, not weeks. Send through measurements and a couple of photos and pricing comes back quickly. The slowest part of most projects is this bit sitting in someone’s “I’ll get to it” pile, and it’s the only stage entirely in your hands.
Design and confirmation. Style, slat spacing, colour and hardware get locked in. Quick when you know what you want; worth a few extra days when you don’t, because changes are free here and expensive after cutting starts.
Fabrication: the main block of time. Cutting, welding and powder coating can’t be rushed without it showing in the finished gate, and this is the stage where your job sits in a queue with everyone else’s. That’s why your order date matters more than your hoped-for install date, and why the honest answer to “how long?” is whatever the queue looks like when you accept your quote. Ask when you enquire; you’ll get the current figure, not a brochure one.
Installation: usually a day. Posts, hanging, adjustment, and motor programming if it’s automated. If you’ve read our installation prep tips beforehand, this part is smooth.
What stretches the timeline
- Automation. Motors, keypads and intercoms add supply and setup time. Browse the automation and accessory options early so the decision doesn’t hold up the order.
- Custom powder coat colours. Popular colours are quick; an unusual colour match can add time waiting on powder supply.

- Site surprises. Sloped driveways, tree roots where a post needs to go, or no power where a motor needs it. Photos with your quote request catch most of these early.
- The season. Spring and early summer are the busiest months of the year. The same gate ordered in May and ordered in November does not wait in the same queue.
Why everyone wants a gate before Christmas
Every year the same thing happens: the weather warms up, people start getting the house ready for visitors and holidays, and suddenly the job that’s been on the list since autumn is urgent. Add in that plenty of people want the place secure before going away over the break, and the pre-Christmas schedule fills from October.
None of that changes fabrication time. It just means the queue in front of your gate gets longer every week you wait. Order in early spring and it’s relaxed. Order in December and it’s a conversation about January.
How to keep your job moving
The parts of the timeline you control are the decision points, so:
- Measure and photograph the opening this week. It’s ten minutes and it starts the clock.
