The airflow rule most people get wrong
Three things decide whether your cover helps the unit or slowly kills it.
Leave clearance. Check the equipment manual for the minimum clearance around your model, because it changes from unit to unit. Never build tight against the fan or the coil faces. Give it room to pull and push air.
Skip the sealed box. A solid, closed-in box traps heat and moisture. That drops efficiency and invites corrosion on the very equipment you are trying to protect. A slatted, ventilated enclosure hides the unit while air still moves straight through it.
Forget the soft wrap. Those fitted fabric covers are built for winterising units in cold climates. On the Gold Coast your unit runs most of the year, and a wrap on a running unit traps moisture against the metal and causes rust. Wrong tool for this climate.
Keep it easy to reach
Every so often a technician needs to get to the unit for a clean or a repair, and you will want to hose it down yourself.
